Two of the most popular ways to treat visible pigmentation are IPL for skin pigmentation (Intense Pulsed Light) and laser. However, with so many clinical devices, you might wonder what’s the best option for your skin concerns with blotchy patches of pigment or an uneven skin tone.

At a glance, this is the technology behind IPL and laser:

Both treatments are effective, but each has its strengths depending on the type of pigmentation being addressed. However, IPL is often preferred for superficial pigmentation, while laser is more suited for stubborn, deeper pigment issues.

But let’s take a closer look at the signs, symptoms and causes of pigmentation, how laser and IPL work for skin pigmentation and which one is right for you.

What are the signs, symptoms, and causes of pigmentation?

Patches of pigment can seem to appear overnight. While sometimes triggered by hormonal influences, they are most often caused by sun exposure.

Over time, natural ageing reveals pigmentation that may have been lying just below the surface, becoming more visible later in life.

Other causes can be post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which occurs because of skin trauma—whether from acne, scarring, or treatments like deep chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and cosmetic devices, such as laser treatments.

Hormonal changes—such as those during pregnancy or perimenopause—can also lead to melasma, a form of pigmentation often appearing as symetricial dark patches on the face.

Our genetics and ethnicity can also play a significant role in how pigmentation develops. If you have a darker skin tone, you might be more prone to melasma or pigmentation caused by inflammation (like acne scars). If your skin is a lighter tone, you’re more likely to develop sun-induced pigmentation, like freckles or sunspots.

Even for the most vigilant among us, a lifetime of sun exposure can leave behind pigmentation that catches us by surprise when it appears. These marks can show up as dark spots, brown patches, or uneven skin tone and texture.

Typically, pigmentation appears on the face, neck, and chest, as well as the hands, arms, shoulders, and other areas frequently exposed to the sun.

When pigmentation shows up, you might wonder what’s the best way to tackle your concerns.

At Select Skin, the first place to start is a skin consultation. During your consultation, we’ll identify the type of pigmentation and the best skincare treatments and solutions to address your unique needs.

What is IPL, and how does it work for skin pigmentation?

When it comes to treating pigmentation, IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is your ally in reducing the visible signs of pigmentation. IPL uses a broad light spectrum that targets pigmentation at various depths in your skin. Think of it as shining a gentle spotlight on those unwanted dark spots, breaking them down so your body can naturally clear them away over time.

How it works

The magic of IPL lies in its light energy. Gentle pulses of broad-spectrum light target pigmentation at various depths in your skin. This energy is absorbed by the pigmentation, breaking it into tiny particles that your body can gradually eliminate. With each treatment, those pesky dark spots start to fade, leaving your skin looking clearer, visibly brighter, and more even-toned.

Versatility

One of the great things about IPL is its flexibility. It’s not just for pigmentation; IPL can tackle other concerns, too, like vascular lesions (those little red or purple veins), freckles, sun damage, and even rosacea. So, if you’re looking to improve your overall skin tone, IPL has you covered on multiple fronts.

Why IPL for skin pigmentation is a good option

What to expect during your IPL treatment

Your IPL session will take around 30 minutes for a full-face treatment. Before we start, a cooling gel is applied to your skin, and you’ll wear protective eyewear to shield your eyes from the light. As the IPL handpiece moves over your skin, you might feel a quick snapping sensation, like a rubber band, but it’s quick, and most of our clients find the sensation manageable.

After the session, your skin may feel warm and slightly tingly, with a bit of redness that usually fades within 24 hours. Over the following week, you’ll notice the pigmented areas darkening before they gradually fade away as your body breaks down the melanin. In about two weeks, you’ll start to see real results—a noticeable reduction in pigmentation and a more even complexion. Depending on your skin and goals, we typically recommend between 1 to 5 sessions for long-term improvement.

Aftercare for IPL treatment

After your IPL session, your skin will need a little extra care. Here’s what you’ll want to do:

What is laser treatment, and how does it work?

Laser treatments provide a focused, precise approach to treating pigmentation. Instead of using a broad spectrum of light like IPL, lasers use specific wavelengths that directly target the melanin in your skin, which causes those pesky dark spots.

How it works

When the laser light hits your skin, the melanin absorbs it, causing the pigment to break down. Over time, your body processes and naturally eliminates these pigment particles, leaving your skin looking clearer, visibly brighter and even-toned.
