Oily Dehydrated Skin

The feeling of oily and dehydrated skin can be uncomfortable, and in the summer months, it can feel even more so.

Your skin looks shiny, and if you’re wearing makeup, it can feel heavy on the skin and most of the time, it feels greasy.

You can’t wait to wash it all away at the end of the day and often with the wrong type of cleanser, leading to more oil followed by a loss of valuable moisture.

A frustrating and confusing cycle of oiliness followed by tight and dehydrated skin conditions is often the outcome.

This cycle will disrupt your skin’s delicate protective barrier if left unchecked.

Your skin’s protective barrier is essential for the health and longevity of your skin, so finding the perfect balance of oil and moisture is an important aspect of your skincare routine.

Finding the perfect balance of oil and moisture in your skin.

For many with oily skin, this will mean reaching for the foaming cleanser, followed by a scrub of some sort and then possibly a lightweight moisturiser or sometimes no moisturiser at all.

And, it isn’t easy convincing you of a better routine. You’ve struggled with oiliness and recurring blemishes for so long; you’re right to be cautious and stick to the skincare routine, you know.

But please, hear me out.

Oily skin is your skin type. Of course, this oil can ebb and flow, especially with the onset of hormonal fluctuations, where the skin can become considerably oily.

Once over this hormonal bump in the road,  love it or hate it, you’ll find your skin settles into a natural oil flow that is uniquely you.

For some of us, excessive oiliness is all over the face, or it can appear down the centre of your face, across the forehead, nose and chin area.

How you cleanse and protect your skin can exacerbate this oiliness, and before long, the wrong type of cleanser and a lack of proper moisturisation can throw your natural oil flow out of balance.

If this continues over a long period, your skin will remain disrupted and produce even more oil. We call this reactive seborrhea, and frustratingly your skin will become dehydrated as well.

When oily skin becomes dehydrated, it brings about other conditions in the skin, which you might blame on your oiliness, but it’s more likely to be caused by the lack of moisture in your skin.

How so? Let me explain.

When you over-cleanse your skin, the natural oils that are there to protect you from moisture loss are missing in action.

Your skin will act to remedy the situation by pushing out more oil. Do this often enough, and you’ll find you have more oil and much less moisture, which can lead to chronic dehydration.

You might think you’ll fix this by applying a moisturiser. Something lightweight and barely-there, or you’ll skip it altogether.

Oh well, it’s only dehydration, no big deal. Except it can be.

Your skin needs a balance of oil and moisture to function correctly.

When the skin is oily and dehydrated other problems can arise. Unable to flow freely, oil and dead cells become trapped in your follicles, leading to blackheads, congestion, and eventually breakouts and blemishes.

When the skin is dehydrated, your acid mantle or protective lipid barrier cannot protect the skin from infection and becomes slow to heal the breakouts that have appeared on your face.

The onset of hormonal activity causes oily skin and blemishes, but how well your skin copes will determine how you manage your oily skin.

It’s important to embrace your oily skin and take care not to strip all the oils away. Oil is not the enemy, but too much cleansing and the wrong type of moisturiser can be.

Getting the basics right is the key to a healthy balance of oil and moisture to keep the skin looking great.
