Let’s talk about the men in our lives.
They’re a diverse bunch – tall, short, the strong, silent type or the rowdy, fast talkers, the great bloke from down the street, the mad footy fan, and, of course, the surfer dude waiting to catch the next wave at Coogee Beach.
And while we can always be assured ‘she’ll be right, mate’ will settle most of life’s unexpected challenges, when it comes to their skin, she won’t always be right.
Exposure to UV radiation is the leading cause of cancer, and according to the World Health Organisation, nearly 1 in 3 deaths from non-melanoma skin cancer are caused by working under the sun.
The unsettling truth is that these statistics affect men more than women.
Of course, any bloke wielding BBQ tongs this summer demands a wide berth until he’s flipped those snags at least a dozen times. But is he wearing a hat, sunscreen and sunglasses while he does it?
Regrettably, the percentage of men who use sunscreen every day is dishearteningly low and needs improvement, that’s for sure!
New Cancer Council research reveals fewer than half (45%) of Australian men agree sun protection is part of their daily routine, despite the fact it’s estimated that men are almost twice as likely as women to die from melanoma.
Data released from the Summer Sun Protection (Life in Australia) report found men are half as likely as women to report applying sunscreen (SPF30 or more) as part of their routine most days in summer (22% compared to 41%).
Regarding where the risky behaviour occurs, men were more likely than women to have recently been sunburnt at an outdoor swimming pool or sporting facility (11% vs 7%) or their workplace (7% vs 3%).
It’s an important reminder for all of us on how important sun protection is for men because we want them to have skin that radiates health and reduces the ever-present risk of skin cancer.
Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. Currently, two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime.
If those stats don’t make them want to grab the sunscreen and slap on a hat on their way out the door, I’m not sure what will. Okay, a gentle nudge from you might help. Let’s do this!
Cancer Council CEO Professor Tanya Buchanan noted at the launch of the Summer Sun Protection television campaign featuring Olympic swimmer Micheal Klim and former cricketer Brad Hodges that ‘it’s never too late for men to improve sun protection habits.’
Professor Buchanan went on to say, ‘More needs to be done to ensure men are safeguarding themselves from the cumulative impact of the sun.’
The sun protection factor (SPF) for men is the same as for us; anything over an SPF30+ will protect the skin when applied adequately and reapplied after a couple of hours.
We’ve curated the best-in-class sunscreens, and we think Synegie Skin Uber Zinc Body comes out on top as the broad-spectrum sunscreen that can be worn daily.
Beyond its highly protective SPF of 50+, it has a creamy texture and will soften and moisturise the skin as it protects from the sun’s harmful rays. But of course, as well as a well-formulated broad-spectrum sunscreen, it’s essential to remember the five steps to proper sun protection.
You might think the main form of sun protection is a broad-spectrum sunscreen. It’s a great place to start, but here in Australia, especially during our long, hot summers, there are five ways to protect ourselves from the scorching Aussie sun.
And, even on those cloudy or rainy days, UV levels can still be high and put all of us at risk, so always check the UV radiation levels before heading outside.
Another challenge is getting the guys to check their skin for changes.
Any noticeable changes in the skin or concerns about skin cancer should be discussed with a medical professional.
Cancer Council Australia recommends skin self-examination for those at elevated risk of skin cancer, particularly for those over 40 years of age, outdoor workers, and those with a personal or family history of skin cancer.
Detecting melanoma and other skin cancers can be significantly improved through regular self-examination and, when there are concerns, a thorough total-body skin assessment by a healthcare professional.
