Exosomes – A New Era in Skincare

If you've been hearing the word "exosomes" and wondering whether it's just another skincare trend, let me reassure you — it isn't. Exosome therapy represents a genuine shift in how we approach skin regeneration, and the science behind it is compelling enough that I'm genuinely enthusiastic about what it's doing for our clients' skin.

At Select Skin, in the heart of Coogee, we offer Exomide Exosome Skin Therapy  — a professional clinic treatment that works at a cellular level to repair, renew, and strengthen skin from within. We've chosen to work with Exomide, distributed in Australia by Xytide, because of their rigorous sourcing standards and the depth of their formulation.

Here's everything you need to know.

How Is Exosome Therapy Delivered?

This is the first thing to understand, because it shapes everything else: exosome skin therapy is not a skincare product you apply at home. It's a professional clinic treatment, and the delivery method is what makes it so effective.

At Select Skin, Exosome Skin Therapy is delivered in conjunction with medical-grade skin needling. The needling creates thousands of tiny micro-channels in the skin, and the exosome serum is applied directly afterwards, while those channels are open. This allows the exosomes to penetrate far deeper than any topical product could — reaching the layers of the skin where repair and regeneration actually happen.

The two steps are designed to work together. The needling prepares the skin; the exosomes do the work. If you've seen or use an exosome serums available in your homecare routine, they're not comparable, although they do complement each other.

The difference isn't the ingredient — it's the depth of delivery.

What Are Exosomes?

Exosomes are tiny messengers produced naturally by your own cells — roughly 1/1000th the width of a human hair. They're packed with proteins, growth factors, essential nutrients, and genetic information, and their job is to communicate between cells, triggering repair and regeneration.

Think of exosomes as your skin's internal postal service. They carry a highly specific package — growth factors, proteins, genetic instructions — and deliver it directly to cells that need repair. But unlike a standard delivery, they don't just drop the parcel at the door. They interact with the recipient cell and activate it to do something: produce collagen, repair damage, calm inflammation.

In a clinical setting, we use exosomes derived from stem cells. Exomide's formulation delivers over 60 active ingredients, including:

  • Seven growth factors (including EGF and TGF-β1) to stimulate skin cell regeneration, boost collagen, and improve elasticity
  • 17 amino acids to support skin repair, hydration, and overall health
  • Six peptides, including Copper Tripeptide-1, known for anti-ageing and firming
  • Eight forms of ultra-low molecular hyaluronic acid for deep, structural hydration
  • Skincare actives including niacinamide, panthenol, and glutathione

That's over 60 active ingredients in total — all working together to repair, renew, and strengthen your skin.

How Exosomes Repair Skin at a Cellular Level

Exosomes don't just deliver nutrients — they interact with your cells and help restore their natural capacity to repair, regenerate, and perform optimally.

When exosomes are applied to the skin and absorbed via the micro-channels created by needling, they travel to cells that are damaged or underperforming. Once they locate a cell in need, they attach to it and release their contents — proteins, growth factors, and genetic instructions — directly into the cell.

That cell then responds by:

  • Stimulating collagen and elastin production for firmer, more elastic skin
  • Repairing DNA and recovering from environmental stress
  • Calming inflammation and combating oxidative stress
  • Rebuilding and strengthening the skin's structural integrity

The result is skin that's healthier, firmer, and more radiant — not because anything has been added to it from the outside, but because its own repair systems have been reactivated from within.

The Evidence: Is Exosome Therapy Science-Backed?

Yes — and this matters to me. I don't recommend treatments because they're new or interesting. I recommend them because the evidence supports them, and in the case of exosomes, it does.

A study published in MDPI Cosmetics found that stem cell-derived exosomes reduced inflammatory markers and increased collagen and elastin production, leading to improved elasticity, fewer wrinkles, and healthier skin overall.

Research published in Cell Communication and Signaling demonstrated that exosomes decrease damaging enzymes, support collagen production, and accelerate cell regeneration, even after significant environmental stress.

A study in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal showed that platelet-derived exosomes improved skin texture, reduced redness, and delivered visible improvements within six weeks.

The science is still evolving, and that's part of what makes this such an exciting moment in skin treatment. What we're seeing in clinic reflects what the research is showing — and there's more to come.

How Exosome Therapy Works Alongside Other Treatments

One of the things I find most compelling about exosomes is how well they amplify other treatments. Paired with IPL or Ultraformer III HIFU, exosomes support faster recovery, reduce post-treatment inflammation, and extend results by working at the cellular level while the other treatment works at the structural level.

Where IPL targets pigmentation and HIFU tightens and lifts, exosomes deepen and sustain those outcomes from within. The skin doesn't just look treated — it's genuinely in better condition.

Your Treatment Journey with Exosome Skin Therapy

Exosome Skin Therapy integrates smoothly into your skincare routine, with visible results and minimal downtime. Here's what to expect.

Before Your Treatment: Consultation and Preparation

Your journey begins with a personalised consultation. We'll assess your skin, discuss your goals and any potential considerations, and recommend a tailored skincare routine to prepare your skin and optimise your results.

During Your Treatment

Exosome Skin Therapy is a two-part treatment: medical-grade skin needling followed by the application of the exosome serum.

The two work as a system — the needling creates the pathways, the exosomes use them to reach the deeper layers of the skin where repair and regeneration happen. Here's what to expect on the day.

A topical anaesthetic cream is applied first to ensure you're comfortable, and we allow around 20 to 30 minutes for it to take full effect before we begin. The full session typically takes 45 to 60 minutes.

We then perform the skin needling using a precision device that creates thousands of tiny micro-channels in the skin. You'll feel some sensation during this step — a mild prickling or warmth — but significant discomfort is uncommon. Depth and intensity are carefully calibrated to your skin by your therapist throughout.

Once the needling is complete, the Exomide exosome serum is applied directly to the skin. This step is entirely pain-free. The micro-channels act as direct pathways, allowing the exosomes to penetrate far deeper than any topical product could — reaching the cells that need them most. The serum is left to absorb fully before you leave the clinic.

After Your Treatment: Recovery and Results

You may notice some temporary redness and mild sensitivity in the hours following treatment, similar to a mild sunburn. This typically settles within a day or two. In the first two weeks, most clients notice improvements in hydration, texture, and radiance — the skin looks clearer and feels more nourished.

The most significant changes emerge around the 28-day mark. This is when the exosomes have had time to activate deeper cellular repair and stimulate meaningful collagen production. Skin appears firmer, smoother, and genuinely healthier.

For optimal results, we recommend a series of three treatments. Collagen remodelling is a cumulative process — each session builds on the changes initiated by the last, and the improvements compound over time. We'll space these to suit your skin and schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is exosome therapy safe?

Yes. Exosomes work with your skin's own biology rather than introducing anything foreign. The treatment is well-tolerated and, when performed by a qualified professional, carries minimal risk. We'll always discuss your individual skin and any contraindications during your consultation.

How is exosome therapy different from PRP?

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) uses components drawn from your own blood to stimulate repair. Exosome therapy uses extracellular vesicles derived from stem cells, which carry a broader, more targeted payload of growth factors and bioactives. Both are regenerative approaches, but exosomes deliver a more consistent, concentrated range of cellular signals.

When will I see results?

Some clients notice improved texture and hydration within the first two weeks. The most visible results — firmer, smoother, more radiant skin — typically emerge around the 28-day mark as collagen remodelling progresses, and continue to build after that.

How many treatments will I need?

For optimal results, we recommend a series of three treatments. Each session builds on the last, and your skin will continue to improve over time. We'll map out a plan that suits your skin and your schedule during your consultation.

Can exosome therapy be combined with other treatments?

Absolutely — in fact, it's one of exosome therapy's strengths. It works particularly well alongside Ultraformer III HIFU and IPL Laser, enhancing results and supporting faster recovery. We'll discuss combination options during your consultation if that's relevant to your goals.

The Future of Skincare with Exosome Therapy

What we're doing with exosomes now is genuinely exciting — but it's also just the beginning. The science is advancing quickly, and future developments could see exosomes tailored to individual skin profiles, with emerging applications in scarring, chronic skin conditions, and hair restoration. We'll be watching that progress closely, and bringing the best of it to our clients as it develops.
